Why I Run

After returning from a year of volunteering for EWB with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Tamale, Ghana, I realized that some of the largest obstacles to eliminating extreme poverty worldwide lie right here at home.  These obstacles range from misconceptions about international development and Canada's role in the world, to untrue stereotypes of Africans as impoverished and helpless instead of the smart, entrepreneurial, and hard working people that I saw in my co-workers and host community in Ghana.  In all, I believe that these misconceptions and stereotypes keep us from making international development a Canadian priority.

I am running with the hope that we may inspire Canadians to become more aware about extreme poverty, and to see Africa in a new light: as a continent of people who are working hard to build a better life for their families and communities.

I am running with the hope that we Canadians will make international development a national priority, right up there with health care, the environment, and the economy.

I am running to support Engineers Without Borders (Canada), so that they may continue to do good work in Africa.  By building local capacity with partner organizations, EWB's projects empower Africans to create opportunities for their families and communities, so that they may escape the grip of poverty.

I hope that you can help support our cause by sponsoring me for Run To End Poverty on July 10th, 2010!

I will be running in the Knee Knacker 50km 'ultra' trail marathon, which will certainly kick my arse.   My goal is to raise $50 for each of 50 kilometres that I will run - for a grand total of $2500!!!  I already have several kilometres covered, please help me to reach my fundraising goal so I will know that the 50k beating I will take on race day will be for a good cause :)

THANK-YOU for your support!

Christian
