Why I Run
Friends, family, and coworkers,
Thank you for visiting my Run to End Poverty campaign page! As always, this time of year brings many charitable initiatives in creative shapes and sizes-- which is why I'm stoked to tell you how I'm running 21.1 km on June 27th to raise funds for Engineers Without Borders.
Having been in Vancouver a little over a year, I have become pretty engaged with the EWB Chapter here, taking on a variety of initiatives and projects. In the coming year, I'm excited to be taking on the chapter leadership responsibility with my friend and colleague, Carissa Vados.
Overseas, Malawi is a region where EWB is finding some pretty remarkable results. They are helping local government and organizations work with communities to improve sanitation facilities and hygiene practices. By helping build the skills of Malawians - around strategy formulation and project management - they are ensuring that these innovations are rooted in local ownership, and not imposed or dependent on outside resources.
The approach EWB is working to spread is called Community Lead Total Sanitation, and is highly effective in getting communities to build latrines and change their hygiene habits. EWB's work has supported 12 districts in Malawi that have a combined population of 4million people.
But they want to expand it further; with every $10,000 raised, our team will have enough to support this work being expanded to another 2 districts in Malawi.
Every dollar has an enormous impact, with EWB running one of the most efficient overseas sending programs in Canada. Out of every dollar you donate, only 14 cents goes to administrative overhead. And, you'llreceive a charitable tax receipt for all donations over twenty dollars.
I'm hoping to reach $1000 with my fundraising effort; and am competing with a few other members in our chapter to get their first! Any amount that you're able to offer would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks for reading through, and for your generous consideration.
