Dear [insert friend's name],
This summer, I am excited to be participating in Run to End Poverty, a nationwide initiative in support of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). On June 27, 2010, I will be running with the Run to End Poverty team in Vancouver, as part of the Scotiabank ½ Marathon and 5km races! As part of the run, I am raising money in support of EWB’s work – funds that will change lives throughout rural Africa.
Run to End Poverty (R2EP) strives to build awareness and support for development initiatives that connect the skills, tenacity and optimism of Africans to tangible opportunities. By collaborating with NGOs and connecting Canadians to Africa, R2EP seeks to break down the stereotypes of poverty and build greater support for international development initiatives with proven success. This is my [first, second] year with Run To End Poverty, and I am very excited to contribute to this initiative and help support EWB’s work.
I am asking you to come on board and support my campaign. My goal for the campaign is to raise $[insert amount]. With your help, I can reach this goal.
To pledge your support, please visit my campaign page at: [insert your runner's profile url from the runtoendpoverty.ca webpage]

Maximizing the Success of Your Campaign
Here are a few tips for maximizing the success of your personal fundraising campaign:
Tip #1: Update and personalize your personal campaign/profile page
We have found that the most successful campaigns are based on compelling personal profile pages. Be sure to update a photo of yourself, and include a personal message that communicates your passion for supporting international development initiatives, and talk about the training and fundraising challenge that you are involved with. This is your chance to tell your story and inspire your sponsors to donate to your campaign and to learn more about the development initiatives supported by Run To End Poverty.
To personalize your profile/campaign page, follow these simple steps:
1) Copy the text from one of our SAMPLE PROFILE TEMPLATES
2) Log in at the left of the screen
3) Once logged in, click on “UPDATE MY PROFILE” - this will take you to your profile dashboard
4) Paste the text in the ‘Personal Message’ box and personalize it
5) Click on ‘SAVE’ at the bottom of your profile dashboard
And you’re done…
Don’t forget to upload your profile photo too!
Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to ask!
The biggest barrier to a successful campaign is to hesitation. Don’t be afraid to ask people to support you with a donation. People often love the opportunity to support a cause that is meaningful to you, and want to help support you to meet your challenge!
It is actually quite easy to build a successful campaign - check out some of the tips above for emailing friends, family, and colleagues, or add a message to your Facebook page.
Tip #3: Set a high goal!
Try setting a high fundraising goal and challenge your friends to help you meet it. You will be surprised at how easy it is to raise $500 or even $2000 online. Typical donations are in the $25 to $50 range, so a fundraising goal of $500 could be met with just 10 to 20 donors. It’s that easy!

Subject: A Summer Favour to Run
Hello friends, family, and coworkers
Happy summer! I hope this message finds you transitioning into warm weather, BBQ season, and plenty of outdoor activities.
On June 27th I’m running XX km with <INSERT COMPANY NAME> as part of the Corporate Challenge for the Run to End Poverty in Vancouver. Our team’s goal is to raise XX thousand dollars for Engineers Without Borders, and I’m hoping you can help us get there!

EWB’s approach is about finding practical and lasting solutions to extreme poverty in Africa. Here, EWB volunteers are helping to improve access to clean water and critical infrastructure, increase farmers’ yields, and support business opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs.
As a supporter of EWB’s work, I feel passionately that generous, hardworking and resilient Africans should have the same opportunities that we have here at home.
You can donate to my campaign, and help me reach my individual goal of <INSERT FUNDRAISING GOAL> by following the link below.

Personalize your Run To End Poverty personal campaign page to maximize impact! Here are a few samples of text that you can personalize and add to your profile page. Thank you for visiting my Run to End Poverty campaign page! As always, this time of year brings many charitable initiatives in creative shapes and sizes– which is why I’m excited to tell how I’m running 21 km on June 27th for Engineers Without Borders. Having been running recreationally on and off for the past few years, this is the first big race I’ve committed to participate in, and am both nervous and excited to take part. Each week I’ll be running fifteen to twenty kilometers to prepare for the race– and I’m hoping you can keep me motivated with my training. For every km I train, I want to raise five dollars for Engineers Without Borders (EWB). EWB’s current strategy in Africa involves developing innovations – in key areas like clean water and adequate sanitation – at a ground-level in partnership with African organizations, and then working with these same organizations to refine and scale-up the results. Over the past ten years, EWB has learned how to use volunteer engineers to a lot of impact for a low cost. One of the areas where EWB is getting results is in Malawi. They are helping local government and organizations work with communities to improve sanitation facilities and hygiene practices. By helping build the skills of Malawians – around strategy formulation and project management – they are ensuring that these innovations are rooted in local ownership, and not imposed or dependent on outside resources. The approach EWB is working to spread is called Community Lead Total Sanitation, and is highly effective in getting communities to build latrines and change their hygiene habits. EWB’s work has supported 12 districts in Malawi that have a combined population of 4million people (not all are served by this work right away). I’m running as part of my workplace team with <INSERT COMPANY NAME>. As a group, we want to raise $5000 for this program. This will allow EWB to support an additional Malawian district with the CLTS strategy. Every dollar has an enormous impact, with EWB running one of the most efficient overseas sending programs in Canada. Out of every dollar you donate, only 14 cents goes to administrative overhead. And, you’ll of course receive a charitable tax receipt for all donations over twenty dollars. Thanks for reading through, and for your generous consideration–cheer me on by donating a kilometer or two! Happy Summer. <INSERT YOUR NAME> Friends, family, and coworkers, Thank you for visiting my Run to End Poverty campaign page! As always, this time of year brings many charitable initiatives in creative shapes and sizes– which is why I’m so stoked to tell you about how I’m running XX km on June 27th for Engineers Without Borders. My coworkers and I at <INSERT COMPANY NAME> are participating in the Corporate Challenge for the Run to End Poverty, and we’re keen to make a powerful impact. Though a certain competitive spirit is certainly driving our efforts, the true value of our work will be reaching towards our goal of raising XX thousand dollars for EWB’s Water and Sanitation Sector in Malawi. EWB’s current strategy in Africa involves developing innovations – in key areas like clean water and adequate sanitation – at a ground-level in partnership with African organizations, and then working with these same organizations to refine and scale-up the results. Every dollar has an enormous impact, with EWB running one of the most efficient overseas sending programs in Canada. Out of every dollar you donate, only 14 cents goes to administrative overhead.
